Using the student sidebar

Where the sidebar opens, what each part shows, and how messaging and flags work in it.

Written by Bryan Fawcett

Click a student in Toddle and the sidebar opens beside the page. It shows who the student is, where they should be right now, today's classes and who to contact, in one panel. It stays open until you close it.

This article describes version 0.8.2. The sidebar needs a licence, and the Student sidebar switch must be on in the extension's toolbar menu.

Where it opens

Click a student's photo or name on any of these:

  • the class pages

  • class settings

  • class attendance

  • the Attendance dashboard, on the Periods, Students and Excusals tabs

  • Homeroom

  • the gradebook's student column

  • the class portfolio's student list

  • any link to a student's profile

It is the same sidebar everywhere. While it is on, Toddle's own small student popover does not open, and hovering opens nothing.

A plain click opens the sidebar. A Cmd, Ctrl, Shift or middle click still does what Toddle does, such as opening the profile in a new tab. Checkboxes, attendance codes, buttons and menus in a row work as normal.

To close it, click ×, press Esc, or click the same student again. Click another student to switch.

The top bar

Open full profile, a message button for the student, and × to close.

The header

  • The student's photo, or their initials if there is none.

  • Their name, then their grade, age and year group, for example "Grade 11 · Age 16 · Class of 2028". The date of birth itself is never shown.

  • Today's daily (homeroom) attendance code.

The Now card

A card under the header, always there. It follows the clock:

  • During a block: the student's attendance code for that block, drawn as Toddle draws it, or "Not marked yet". Then where they should be: the block and its times, the class, the room and the teacher timetabled for it.

  • Before or between blocks: what is next, and today's codes so far.

  • After the last block: "School day over", with a count of each attendance code today.

  • Or "No classes today", or "Timetable not available" if the extension cannot read the timetable.

About the student

  • Homeroom advisor, with their Display Title, email and a message button.

  • Student Group and Room number, if your school uses those profile fields. Other additional fields are never shown, because they can hold phone numbers or IDs.

  • Contacts: each contact's name, relationship, phone numbers (tap to call) and email. A family account that no contact covers is listed under Family accounts.

Flags

The Flags section stays closed until you click the eye button. Only then does the extension ask Toddle for that student's flags. It forgets them when the sidebar closes. If you have chosen to show flags everywhere, they show here too.

Before you share your screen, check that flags are hidden. See Hiding student flags before you share your screen.

Classes: the Today and All tabs

  • Today lists today's classes in time order: the class happening now at the top, then what is still to come, then what is over (greyed out). Each row shows the block, times, room and teacher, and that period's attendance code at the right, drawn exactly as Toddle draws it.

  • All lists every class the student is in, with its primary teacher.

The arrow keys, Home and End move between the tabs. Your choice of tab is kept while the page is open.

The class view

Click any class to open it in the sidebar. You see:

  • the block and time, marked Now, Next or Today

  • the room

  • the parent course, when it has a different name

  • every teacher on the class, once each: the primary teacher first, marked Primary, then the others. Each shows their Display Title, email and a message button.

Click Back, or press Esc, to return to the student.

Messaging

There are message buttons for the student, for each teacher, for the student's family channel and for each family member. They open Toddle's own chat, exactly as Toddle's popover does, so your school's messaging rules still apply. The extension does not send any message itself.

If Toddle's messaging is not available on a page, the button opens an email to that person instead.

It looks like Toddle

The sidebar uses Toddle's own fonts, colours, buttons and tabs, so it fits in with the rest of the page.

What it reads

Only what your own Toddle account can already see, and only when you open a student or a class. Nothing is written to Toddle and nothing is stored on your computer: what the sidebar reads is kept in the page's memory for a few minutes, then dropped. See What the extension can and cannot see.

Turning it off

Switch off Student sidebar in the extension's toolbar menu. Toddle then behaves exactly as it always has.

If the sidebar does not open, see Troubleshooting.
