Open data: Insights and the analytics console

Two public dashboards over the Mukoko News corpus, and how to download the underlying data.

Written by Bryan Fawcett

Mukoko News publishes what it knows about its own corpus. Both dashboards are public, need no account, and are meant for researchers, journalists and anyone curious about how African news coverage is distributed.

Insights

Insights is the overview: how many articles and publications are in the index, publishing volume over time, the busiest sources, topic distribution, country coverage and sentiment breakdown.

Some figures — sentiment and quality among them — are computed only over the portion of the corpus that has been through AI enrichment. Where that is the case the page states the coverage percentage next to the figure, so you can see what share of the corpus it actually describes.

The analytics console

Analytics is the deep dive Insights links into. You set filters — a search term, date range, countries, sources, categories — and get back a daily series plus breakdowns by source, country, category, keyword, named entity and byline, along with sample articles.

Results are captioned with the query that was actually run. If a filter you asked for was adjusted or dropped, the caption says so rather than quietly returning something else.

Downloading the data

  • From Insights — the "Download open data" link returns the whole summary bundle as JSON, or as a CSV containing publication, topic and country tables.

  • From Analytics — export the result of the query you are looking at, as JSON or CSV.

Both exports are rate-limited so one heavy user cannot slow the site down for readers. If you need bulk or repeated access for a research project, get in touch rather than scripting against the page.
