Mukoko News is built for African networks, where data is bought by the bundle and a connection is not always there. Most of that work is invisible, but it is worth knowing what it does so you can use it deliberately.
How the feed loads
A page at a time. The feed fetches a small batch of stories and then more as you scroll, instead of downloading everything up front. If you stop scrolling, it stops downloading.
It doesn't re-fetch what you already have. Scrolling further asks the server for the stories after the last one you saw, not for the whole list again — so a long scroll costs the same per story as a short one.
Article text is not downloaded until you open it. The card carries a headline, an excerpt and one image; the full body only arrives when you tap through.
Reading offline
Articles you open and pages you visit are cached on your device, so they stay readable when the connection drops. Open the stories you want while you have signal — on Wi-Fi if you can — and they will be there later. Fresh stories load again as soon as you are back online.
NewsBytes
NewsBytes is a full-screen vertical feed for skimming: one story per screen, swipe up for the next. It is the cheapest way to see a lot of headlines quickly, because you only pull the full article for the ones you stop on.
