What is Mukoko News?

What Mukoko News is, where the stories come from, and what it does with them.

Written by Bryan Fawcett

Mukoko means beehive in Shona — the place a community gathers and stores what it knows. Mukoko News is a Pan-African news reader that collects stories from African newsrooms into one feed, so you can follow what is happening across the continent without opening a dozen sites.

We aggregate, we don't report

Mukoko News does not write articles. Every story you read was published by a newsroom — the publisher's name, the journalist's byline where we can find it, and the country are shown on the card, and tapping through takes you to the publisher's own page. We add the index; they do the journalism.

What we add on top

  • One feed across many countries — stories from newsrooms across Africa in a single place, ranked by what you told us you care about.

  • Automatic labelling — each story is tagged with topics and keywords by an AI model so the feed, search and filters have something to work with. It is generated, not hand-checked, so treat the labels as a finding aid rather than an editorial judgement.

  • Built for real connections — the feed is designed to load in small pieces and re-use what your phone has already downloaded. See reading on a slow or expensive connection.

Is it free?

Reading is free and you do not need an account. Signing in lets your saved articles and interests follow you between devices, and it is the same Mukoko account used across the other Mukoko apps.
